Carey was once a popular fashion model. She is 5'10" tall, and was popular among famous American designers such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren as well as others. Her father was a distinguished geologist, who in 1979 was named Scientist of the year by the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists. Carey traveled all over in honor of her father's efforts. As she was attending an institution called the University of Colorado, Carey started modeling for a side. A representative of Ford Model Agency in New York noticed her and asked for help. She stayed in France for a short time, including Paris and Bordeaux. After that, she came back home to New York for her college study and further to build her career as a model. While modeling she also studied literature full time in New York University. Then she became interested in acting, and began training in the Neighborhood Playhouse of New York. In 1986 she made her first appearance as an actor with a small role as a minor character in "Club Paradise" in the film "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams. When she is not working she loves skiing, windsurfing, climbing rocks as well as whitewater kayaking.
